Two main families of device are used. Focused ultrasound, such as Ultherapy or Sofwave, delivers heat at a set depth beneath the surface. Radiofrequency devices, such as Thermage and Exilis, heat tissue by passing current through it. Both aim at the same endpoint: collagen contracts when heated to a certain temperature, and the healing response builds more over the following months.
Results appear gradually rather than immediately, and how much they achieve depends heavily on how much laxity there is to begin with. These devices work best on mild to moderate looseness. Where there is significant sagging, no non-surgical device produces what a lift produces, and a provider who says otherwise is selling rather than assessing.
What to ask a provider
- Which device, and why that one for my skin?
- How many months until I see the result, and how long should it last?
- Realistically, am I a candidate, or am I closer to a surgical conversation?
