Cellulite

Dimpling on the thighs and buttocks caused by fibrous bands tethering the skin. Treated by several unrelated devices, which is why it overlaps other categories.

Last updated August 1, 2026

Cellulite is not simply fat. The dimpled appearance comes largely from fibrous bands running from deeper tissue to the underside of the skin, tethering it down so the fat between them bulges slightly. That structure is why losing weight often does not remove it, and why fat reduction devices aimed at volume are not aimed at the actual cause.

Because several unrelated devices are marketed for it, cellulite tends to show up as a claimed benefit on machines bought for something else. Among providers near Boulder who name a real cellulite procedure, most also sell fat reduction, skin tightening or muscle toning, and only a handful offer a treatment aimed specifically at the tethering. Asking which mechanism a treatment actually addresses is the way to tell the difference.

It is also worth saying plainly that cellulite is extremely common and is not a medical problem. Treating it is a preference, not a need.

How it gets treated

These are the approaches used locally. A provider may offer one of them or several, which is why the same name appears under more than one heading on this site.

  • Mechanical subcision, releasing the tethering bands
  • Acoustic wave therapy
  • Radiofrequency devices, sometimes combined with muscle stimulation
  • Endermologie, a mechanical massage technique

What to ask a provider

  • Which mechanism does this device target: the bands, the fat, or the skin?
  • Is this a treatment you bought for cellulite, or a benefit claimed by another device?
  • How long does the result last, and what does maintenance cost?
