Pelvic Floor Treatment (Emsella)

A chair that delivers electromagnetic pulses through the seat to contract the pelvic floor muscles, used for urinary incontinence. You stay fully clothed.

Last updated August 1, 2026

The Emsella chair applies high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy through the seat, causing pelvic floor contractions far more numerous than anyone could perform voluntarily. Sessions are short, you remain dressed and seated, and a course usually runs over several weeks.

It is most often marketed for stress urinary incontinence, the kind that happens with coughing, laughing or exercise. Incontinence has several different causes and they are not all treated the same way, so an assessment that establishes which type you have is worth more than a package of sessions bought on the strength of an ad. Pelvic floor physical therapy is an established option worth knowing about too.

What to ask a provider

  • Has anyone assessed which type of incontinence I have?
  • How many sessions, and what does maintenance look like afterward?
  • How does this compare to pelvic floor physical therapy for my situation?
