A growing number of med spas offer hormone therapy next to their cosmetic menu. The treatments themselves are ordinary prescription medicine: estrogen and progesterone for menopausal symptoms, testosterone for low testosterone, delivered as creams, patches, injections or implanted pellets.
Because this is prescribing rather than a cosmetic service, the questions worth asking are about the clinical process rather than the product. Who is doing the prescribing, what labs are drawn before and during treatment, how dosing is adjusted, and how the clinic handles the parts of your health that sit outside their menu. The word bioidentical describes the molecular structure of a hormone; on its own it does not tell you whether a product is FDA-approved or compounded, so it is worth asking which you are being offered.
What to ask a provider
- Which clinician prescribes, and what is their license?
- What labs do you draw before starting and how often after?
- Is what you are prescribing an FDA-approved product or compounded?
